1: Open the graphic you have chosen in Paint Shop Pro (FILE/OPEN/click on the file name of your graphic/OPEN).

2: Click WINDOW/DUPLICATE.

3: Close the original graphic. Doing this insures that you will not accidentally erase the original file by saving over it.

4: Many of the graphics on this site are 256 colors or 16 colors(.gif). You will need to increase the color depth of the graphic for this editing. Click COLORS/INCREASE COLOR DEPTH/16 MILLION COLORS.

5: Now you can DUPLICATE the graphic as many times as you like. If you need five buttons, duplicate it four more times.

6: Choose the text tool (it's the button that looks like an "A") and click where you want to put the text. In the TEXT ENTRY box, choose the font, font size and font color(s). Check 'antialias' and 'floating'. Type your text in the 'Enter text here' field. Click the down arrow next to the eye icon to see how the text will appear on the button. You can move the text to the proper position in the next step. When you are satisfied with the way it looks, click OK

7: The text will appear on the graphic as a floating selection (lines moving around the text). You need to leave the text 'selected' to work with it. If you want to see how it looks without the moving lines, click the title bar at the top of another graphic and you will see the first one without the lines. Then you must click the top of the first graphic to continue working with it. To move the text: Position the cursor over the text. Click and hold the left mouse button to drag the text to the proper position. If the text just didn't turn out right, Click EDIT/UNDUE to delete it, and go back to step 6.

These are the basics for adding text. You may want to go a little further and add a drop shadow (EFFECTS/3D EFFECTS/DROP SHADOW) or one of the other special effects in PSP7.

Click SELECTIONS/SELECT NONE to clear the selection.

Saving the New Graphic for the Web

Click FILE/EXPORT/GIF OPTIMIZER.

On the TRANSPARENCY tab:
-If the graphic is square or rectangle with no border, it does not need to be transparent so check NONE.
-For other shapes, choose 'Areas that match this color'. Click in the color box and choose a color to match or blend with the background of the page the button will be on.

On the COLORS tab:
To create a smaller file size, adjust colors and dithering as low as you can without losing quality in the graphic.

Click OK, choose where you want to save the file, give it a name and save.
